The track was originally recorded for Taylor's second studio album, K.T.S.E. and was played at the album's listening party. It was ultimately left off the final version of the album due to sample clearance issues.

Interviewed on Hot97, Taylor stated that an updated version of the album would soon be released including the track. It would also include a new spoken word outro by Lauryn Hill. After the update of the album failed to release, this version of the song leaked in July 2018.

Later in 2018, Kanye West decided to rework the song for his ill-fated Yandhi album. This version of the song included West rapping the second verse himself instead of Taylor. Yandhi would never see the light of day and was scrapped in favor of West's Jesus Is King album. This prompted Taylor to again update the song with an all new orchestrated outro and release it as her own single without West's vocals or the Lauryn Hill outro.
