Originally intended to be included on Kanye West's Yeezus 2, and later So Help Me God, the song was to feature a verse from Drake as well. This was later premiered as a remix on OVO Sound Radio in September 2015. We can determine when Drake's verse was recorded because he mentions being at the Waldorf in Germany, where he was last seen in March 2014.

When The Weeknd was added to the track is much harder to deduce. The first mention of The Weeknd having a song with West is more than a year later, in July 2015 when Ed Sheeran made an offhand comment about it while being interviewed by Zane Lowe.

"In my head I'm like, 'The Weeknd doesn't want to write a song!' The Weeknd doesn't work with anyone. He's got one feature on his album, which is Kanye West. He doesn't want to do that."

You can, however, infer that the song with all three artists existed by at least August 2014. A credible leaker on KTT named GOODMUSICINSIDER held an AMA on August 19, 2014 where he stated that West had a song with Drake and The Weeknd that would be included on Yeezus 2. Tell Your Friends is the only known collaboration between all three artists.

West released his own verse recorded for the track on SoundCloud in October 2015 under the title "When I See It". This verse was included on the final track, but West's voice was filtered to make him inaudible to the listener.

An unknown version of the track was played by West in July 2014 at a listening party in London.
