Famous was first worked on in March 6, 2015, when Charlie Heat produced the beat in Paris. At this point, the track was titled "Nina Chop", referring to the sample of Nina Simone's "Do What You Gotta Do" used in the track. Young Thug was originally the sole feature, with Rihanna added later and Swizz Beatz producing the second half of the song in January 2016. Young Thug was later removed from the song entirely.

On May 24, 2016, Chance The Rapper was interviewed by Zane Lowe on Beats 1. During the interview, he talked about working on The Life of Pablo and played an unreleased version of Nina Chop he was featured on. He said his verse was removed when the album was being mastered. An unheard version of Waves with contributions from Chance was premiered as well.

Famous is probably most famous for the controversy sparked by one of West's lines in the song, where he rapped about interrupting Taylor Swift during her 2009 VMA acceptance speech.

"For all my Southside niggas that know me best
I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex
Why? I made that bitch famous"

West assured that he personally called Swift to make sure the line didn't offend her, and that she was okay with it. This appeared not to be the case when Swift was giving her Grammy speech for Best Album on February 15, 2016. During the speech, she seemingly criticized West, stating that "there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or try to take credit for your accomplishments or your fame." West responded during a concert on February 24, 2016 at 1OAK LA, accusing Swift of lying, saying that she heard the line and loved it.

In July 2016, Kim Kardashian posted a series of Snapchat videos appearing to show West having a call with Swift where she approved the lines in question. She can be heard saying that the line was "like a compliment" and that she appreciated West asking for her approval of the line, calling it "a really good show of friendship".
